Machinability
AISI 1018 carbon steel is rated at 62% of AISI 1112 carbon steel. Machining can provide this alloy with a good finish and continuous and hard chips. The alloy can be processed under all conditions.
Forming
It is easy to form this grade of carbon steel under annealing conditions.
Welding
AISI 1018 carbon steel can be welded using most conventional methods, such as gas, acetylene oxide, resistance and submerged fusion welding.
Heat treatment
This Grade can be surface hardened to Rc 42, but only in thin sections. If the thicker part exceeds 4 in. , You can get Rc 28-30.
Forging
AISI 1018 carbon steel can be forged in the range of 996-1260°C (1825-2300°F).
Thermal processing
AISI 1018 carbon steel can be easily hot processed.
Cold working
The cold working of AISI 1018 carbon steel will affect the hardness and mechanical properties. Intermediate annealing must be performed to overcome the alloy’s tendency to work hardening.
Annealing
The alloy can be fully annealed by soaking at 899°C (1650°F) and then cooling in the furnace. Process annealing can be carried out at a temperature of 649°C (1200°F).
